They are the most common breed.
__FORCETOC__
First domesticated in the Andes Mountains of South America in 5000 BC, the American Shorthair is the oldest breed of guinea pig. They were originally known as the English Shorthair (and still are to some) up until the 1960s, when the American Cavy Breeders Association began calling them American Shorthairs.
== Temperament ==
Most American Shorthairs have sweet and lovable personalities, and it is said that they get along exceptionally well with other guinea pigs. They are relatively easy to tame, and once they are, they love being handled and respond well to affection.
== Physical Characteristics ==
American Shorthairs are, like their name suggests, shorthaired guinea pigs. Their short coat is smooth and is not curled.
=== Color ===
American Shorthairs come in a wide variety of recognized colors.
